Summer is great for getting away, and sometimes that getaway is only a few hours away from home. Cabins are a popular destination in Canada, and the best part is that cabins can be visited all year round! If you have never spent much time at a cabin before, and experienced the #cabinlife, here are ten easy steps to learn how to do so!
Step #1 - Find a Cabin
Let's face it, not everyone can afford their own cabin. That's ok! There are solutions to this small problem. You can always rent one (maybe even share the costs by renting with friends or family), or find a friend who already had a cabin and tag along!
Step #2 - Get your Fish Game ON!
Chances are there is a lake close by, so fishing is an absolute must! If you get queasy at the thought of touching a fish, get over it! It's a fish. Also, be sure to dress appropriately if going by boat and spending a great deal of time under the sun! There is some great gear over at Fin + Bone.
Step #3 - Catch a Fish
And the fight begins, the struggle between man and nature, predator and prey. If you fail once, try and try again, you're bound to catch one! Here is a shot from my very first time fishing! That is one handsome master bass!
Step #4 - Eat the Fish
Who doesn't love homemade fish n' chips? If you don't like fish, you're wrong. Note: Depending on the season, you may not be allowed to eat the fish, so be kind and release it back into the wild so it can reproduce and make more fish!
Step #5 - Enjoy Nature
Go for a run in the early morning, sit by the dock to watch the clouds go by, or take a kayak out on a quiet lake to watch the full moon rise, there are may critters around too! Note: Do avoid getting eaten alive by mosquitoes, bears or coyotes.
Step #6 - Live Without Internet
Maybe you already have no choice because the cabin you are at has no service, but if that is not the case, just put the electronics away, and enjoy the things you would be doing if you weren't distracted by a screen. There is knitting, wood-burning, wake-boarding, croquet, water-colours, canoeing, playing board games, card games and more! You will have a deeper and more enriching experience. Now, I know what you're thinking...but how will I update my Instagram or catch more Pokemon??? But if I can do it, so can you!
Step #7 - Have a Bonfire
What cabin experience could be complete without a fire? This is a classic, and great tradition. Throw in some marshmallows to bring back childhood memories, sing songs, or tell scary stories. Or just sit quiet, watch the stars and listen to the crackle of the fire...
Step #8 - Lose Track of Time
Take advantage of not having a set schedule, like we normally live on a daily basis. Stay up late, wake up early, or take an afternoon nap. Eat four times a day, or only twice! Just pay attention to the time to know when is a good time to go fishing. I personally try to get up early because I absolutely love the peaceful tranquility of an early morning rise, when the dew is still on the grass blades and birds are chirping away...
Step #9 - Take Pictures
If you are going to use technology for anything, it should be to capture the moments and sights you experience while at the cabin. Don't be a tourist, but snap a few pics once in a while, you won't regret it.
#10 - Have a Great Time
Relax, or maybe don't relax if you're looking for adrenaline rushes, but just make sure you enjoy yourself. That is the point of a cabin, to escape from every day pressures and daily demands, and to immerse yourself with nature in a way you could never do so back in the city.
We enjoy going to our friend's cabin so much, we made it a bit of a yearly tradition now! If you know me, you know I'm very much a girly city girl, but even I enjoy hiking and fishing!
